Here’s what I had to say about the song:
“Teenage Idol’ explores how we use our icons and idols on a personal and societal level. I see this theme in the song when I look at it now, although this wasn’t consciously in my mind, as I was writing it. We raise up these heroes in our culture, but they are just people. They have the same struggles and shortcomings that we all have. But we turn them into a symbol of something and, in the process, we tend to deny them their humanity. When they falter, we can be merciless. It’s kind of a cruel ritual but it’s age old, and I don’t think it will stop any time soon.”
