Outside our walls the world burns
We barely feel the heat
World wars and open sores
All life and death to me
Seem clear now suddenly
Deep inside this silent heart
A glowing drum still beats
Funeral song or lullaby
It’s played for days and weeks
But the baby still won’t sleep
If we were free would you still love me
If we were free would you still be here
If you say no I guess I understand
But let me tell you the answer for me
Is yes, definitely
As we sit impatiently
Amid the dials and screens
Waiting for that distant war
To take away our dreams
I still find it all hard to believe
Stuck in limbo and looking out
Across the bitter sea
We sail below a worried sky
Through clouds of mystery
Who knows what lies beneath
If we were free would you still love me
If we were free would you still be here
If you say no I guess I understand
But let me tell you the answer for me
Is yes, definitely
And so we die and don’t know why
These latter days unfold
As though our lives were compromised
By someone long ago
Until now we didn’t know
It’s cruel, and so it goes
If we were free would you still love me
If we were free would you still be here
If you say no I guess I understand
But let me tell you the answer for me
Is yes, definitely
